In a breathtaking showdown, Alex Marquez emerged victorious in the sprint race, leaving his rival Pedro Acosta in the dust. Despite qualifying in fifth position, Marquez's Gresini Ducati team pulled off an impressive comeback, denying Acosta, who started from the front row, his first MotoGP win.
The race started with a clean sweep, with polesitter Marco Bezzecchi taking an early lead. However, it was Marquez who made the most of his strong getaway, quickly moving into third place at the first corner. Meanwhile, Fabio Quartararo settled into fourth position.
As the race progressed, Quartararo and the rest of the field fell behind, leaving the leading trio to put on a spectacular show for the spectators at the picturesque Algarve venue. Acosta took the lead from Bezzecchi on the front straight as lap three began, with Marquez following suit a lap later.
The real battle commenced on lap four, as Marquez made his first move on Acosta. For three intense and captivating laps, the circuit witnessed a fierce duel, with Marquez finally securing a lead that he held onto until the end of lap nine.
Marquez enjoyed a brief respite before Acosta mounted a late surge on the final lap. Visibly struggling, Marquez managed to keep his GP24 ahead of the factory KTM, edging out Acosta in a nail-biting finish.
Bezzecchi was hot on their trail, ready to pounce on any mistake. However, he had to settle for third, crossing the finish line just over half a second behind the winner. Quartararo rode a solitary race to fourth, while Fabio di Giannantonio worked his way up to fifth by the end.
The closing stages saw a battle for sixth and seventh positions, with Francesco Bagnaia and Johann Zarco seemingly in control. But Gresini's Fermin Aldeguer had other plans, overtaking both riders during a chaotic final lap in the midfield. Aldeguer crossed the finish line just ahead of his rivals.
Brad Binder secured the last point for the factory KTM team, while Marc Marquez's substitute, Nicolo Bulega, unfortunately fell early in the race.
