Tokyo, November 13, 2025 – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has successfully concluded a cooperative trial alongside Kirin Beverage Co., Ltd. and Kirin Group Logistics Co., Ltd., focusing on developing core technologies to automate the intake and dispatch of goods in beverage storage facilities, as well as the loading and unloading of trucks. Moving ahead, these partners plan to push forward with additional research and testing to pave the way for full-scale implementation.

This collaborative effort, which kicked off in August 2024, took place at LogiQ X Lab – a hands-on testing site nestled within Yokohama Hardtech Hub (YHH), MHI's collaborative innovation space in Yokohama's Honmoku district – plus Kirin Group Logistics' Nishi-Nagoya site and other locations. (Note 1)

In this trial, MHI harnessed a cutting-edge autonomous forklift still in development, powered by ΣSynX (Sigma Syncs) (Note 2), a component of their 'Smart Connections' suite that integrates ΣSynX tech. The tests were geared toward building fundamental tech for adaptable self-guided operations and secure teamwork between humans and machines. This included smart sorting of loads during warehouse tasks, dynamically adjusting paths based on shifting storage spots or conditions, and super-efficient shelving techniques.

Thanks to this joint project, MHI has laid down the blueprints for automating the full spectrum of cargo management – from truck offloading, through warehouse maneuvers, to truck reloading – and confirmed these methods' effectiveness in live distribution environments. To help beginners grasp this, think of it like upgrading from manual assembly lines to robots that 'think' ahead: the forklifts aren't just moving boxes randomly; they're using AI to plan the best routes, avoiding obstacles and coordinating with human workers to keep everything safe and speedy.

They gradually rolled out enhancements using ΣSynX for smarter automation. For instance, an automated picking system for internal warehouse freight was launched in December 2024 at Kirin Group's Ebina Logistics Center in Kanagawa Prefecture. (Note 3) Drawing from these trial outcomes, MHI aims to boost the adaptability of its 'Smart Connections' offerings across every corner of logistics and storage.
